what is the difference between income-based and section 8?

Hi, I am a single mom of two children younger than age 3. I just left the father but cannot truly afford to be on my own. I will have to apply for Section 8/HUD until I get on my feet. I was wondering, what is the difference between Section 8 and HUD? Is it just income-based or it's a lot more to it than I think? One of my sons and I receive SSI for disabilitiy, will that hurt my chances of getting a Section 8 housing?

Broke Mama
It's things like this that I think perhaps I should write in my own journal, but then again, I joined this group to reach out to others, right? To share stories and experience the welcome relief of knowing I'm not alone in this sort of struggle, but the only other post, besides my own, was a solicitor...

I'm poor, and feeling it more this week than usual. Just found out, another check bounced, and now I'm face with overage charges that grow $10 each day that it takes to restore the balance. I mean, it's one thing to just be on a limited income, budget, and not have a lot of extra money left over, it's a whole different thing to FEEL poor. And sometime I feel it so deeply my bones ache.

This time it's not so bad. I was able to catch my mistake and it only cost me $100. I know I'll feel it for a couple of months. There wont be any extras or treats for a while, but it's not as bad as it was when I first became a broke Mama.

That was 2001. I left my husband, and with him, my comfortable middle class life style. He dumped almost everything I bought while we were together on me. Not my clothes (his new woman, the reason for my leaving, kept most of them) but the useless stuff, like antique furniture and china. He'd come by and say, he was going to find a dumpster, but thought he would see if I wanted any of this junk first. So bit by bit I sold off every thing. Most of it wouldn't fit into my one room apartment, and I NEEDED money more than I needed sentimental memories. The blessing was the bone china I'd collected just to fill the glass cabinet. Each cup and matching saucer was worth about $30, and I had a couple of dozen sets.
One cup and one saucer, fed my son and myself for a week. I can't help but feel a strange stirring inside of me when I am in someone elses house, sitting on furniture like I sold that year, or looking at their collections of knick knacks.

I grew up poor, but by marrying, I'd thought I left that sort of life behind. It was weird being back in poverty, trying to remember those survival skills, and trying to forget how much easier everything came with money. I made bad choices when marrying. I did not remain employed, I did not persue an education, or a career path. I was a wife, a house wife, and then a mother, a stay at home mom.

The last five years have been struggle, but I am making progress, slowly but surely. I would like to talk about it more... is anybody out there?

Are there any other broke mamas?

Here's the stitch...
My daughter Julia is four now, she has been wearing mostly her brothers hand-me-downs. Occassionally a friend will pass down some cute girl outfits, but otherwise it's the thrift store, and more recently the free box at the local church.
She will be starting preschool in the fall and almost everything she has in the way of clothes is stained or tattered. So I have less than a month to do better, with out the means to do so. Any suggestions?
